AI agent monitoring tools comparison

Last updated: October 23, 2026.

Coding agents read files, run shell commands and call MCP tools on developer machines, so security teams want to see those actions and stop the risky ones before they run. The options split into two groups. Each agent ships its own controls (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot and Codex all document hooks that can deny a tool call, managed policies and telemetry), and each covers only itself. Third-party products install into those same hooks to apply one policy and one log across several agents. Mintive Agent Monitor is in the second group, and it shares users, rules and SIEM export with Mintive's MCP and LLM gateways.

How we compared these AI agent monitoring tools

The facts come from each vendor's public documentation and pricing pages, checked on October 23, 2026. A cell says "not documented" when we couldn't find the fact on the vendor's own pages, which doesn't mean the capability is missing. There is no ranking column: each row ends with when it fits best.

How to choose an AI agent monitoring tool

Monitoring Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot and Codex together

Every agent's built-in hooks work, but each covers only that agent, and you write and host the hook scripts yourself. With two or more agents in use, a cross-agent product gives you one rule set, one activity feed and one SIEM stream. Mintive Agent Monitor installs into Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot CLI and Codex, and covers Claude Cowork prompts through Claude inference hooks (Claude Enterprise). The same rules apply across them, though what a rule can block varies by agent. See where agent data shows up.

Monitoring coding agents that call MCP tools

Coding agents increasingly reach internal systems through MCP servers. Pairing the agent monitor with an MCP gateway means the same users and groups decide which tools an agent can reach and what gets blocked on the machine. In Mintive, Agent Monitor and the MCP gateway share identities and audit export, and Mint Guard (enabled on request) screens tool calls that go through the gateway.

Agent monitoring without storing prompts or code

Look for metadata-only logging that still enforces rules. Claude Code and Codex redact prompt text in OpenTelemetry by default, and Mintive's zero data retention mode keeps only metadata such as user, tool name, status and timing while rules still run on each call.

Built-in monitoring in Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot and Codex

The agent's own controls may be enough: managed settings to roll out hooks, telemetry to your collector, and the vendor's audit log. Note what each audit log leaves out: Cursor's excludes prompts and code, and GitHub's excludes prompts sent to Copilot locally, and both vendors point to hooks for that data.

AI agent monitoring FAQ

How do you monitor Claude Code in the enterprise?

Claude Code exports metrics and events over OpenTelemetry, which admins can turn on for everyone through managed settings, with prompt text and tool details off by default. Team and Enterprise plans also include an analytics dashboard. Mintive Agent Monitor adds hook-based capture of file reads, commands, MCP tool calls and prompts, with rules and SIEM export. See Claude Code setup.

Can you block commands in Cursor?

Yes. Cursor hooks such as beforeShellExecution and preToolUse can deny an action before it runs, and Enterprise admins can sync hooks to every team member. Mintive registers its script on preToolUse, so a rule such as a kubectl get secrets match blocks the shell command before it runs. See Cursor setup.

Does Claude Code have audit logs?

Claude Code's own monitoring is OpenTelemetry: events for prompts, tool decisions and tool results go to your collector. A per-machine record of what agents did needs hooks or a tool that installs them, and Mintive logs each action with user identity and timestamp, keeping content only when content logging is on.

What does the GitHub Copilot audit log capture?

It records Copilot plan changes and agent activity on GitHub, kept for 180 days, with streaming to a SIEM. It does not include prompts a user sends to Copilot locally, and GitHub points to custom hooks for that. See GitHub Copilot setup.

What are the AI coding agent security tools?

There are two groups. The agents ship their own controls, and Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot and Codex all document hooks, managed policies and telemetry. Third-party products such as Mintive, Zenity, Noma, Pillar, Knostic, Lasso and Harmonic add policy, blocking and logging across agents, mostly through those same hooks.

Can I monitor coding agents without storing prompts or code?

Yes. Claude Code and Codex redact prompt text in OpenTelemetry by default. Mintive's zero data retention mode, on the Enterprise plan, stores only metadata such as user, tool name, status and timing, while rules still run on each call.
